Cannabidiol – What Is It?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is an active compound found in marijuana. It was first discovered in 1940 by Dr. William C. Bennett, who was the editor of a medical journal called The Lancet. It is one of the few known phytocannabinoids in marijuana plants and accounts for about 40% of its overall extract. Unlike other known phytocannabivres, however, it has not been linked to adverse side effects. It has also been shown to have medicinal benefits in animal studies.click reference

Like all phytocannabivres, CBD is derived from plant parts, including stems, leaves, seeds, and roots, and is a carboxylic acid derivative. Carboxylic acids are formed when plant parts are heated or broken down in the lab. When CBD is heated in the lab, it breaks down into two molecules of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and one molecule of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). Because CBDA is a more powerful anti-inflammatory than THC, scientists have used CBD as an alternative treatment for chronic pain and other inflammatory diseases, particularly in the case of arthritis. They also saw promise in CBD for epilepsy patients, but these results were not definitive because of a lack of rigorous clinical trials. Researchers are still studying CBD for use in treating certain types of cancer, depression, and anxiety.

Most medical experts agree that CBD has no significant side effects and that it can be helpful in reducing inflammation and other problems. In addition, studies have shown that CBD has antioxidant activity. In clinical studies, patients have reported that CBD has reduced their appetite and slowed down the aging process in mice. For those who want to reduce the amount of prescription medications they take, CBD has been shown to be beneficial in relieving anxiety. Furthermore, it may even help reduce the chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study recently conducted in Spain found that CBD is effective in blocking the formation of a protein called amyloid plaque, which forms in the brain as the body begins to age. Other studies have found that CBD can help prevent the development of Parkinson’s disease and may help with the treatment of Alzheimer’s
